Breakfast Porridge
Simple, comforting, and endlessly adaptable, this porridge is a great way to make the most of rolled oats — a low-cost grain with a gentle, creamy flavour. Whether you like it plain or topped with fruit, seeds, or spices, it’s a quick and easy way to start your day right.
Ingredients
1/2 cup rolled oats
1 cup water or milk (dairy or plant-based)
Pinch of salt (optional)
OPTIONAL TOPPINGS
Honey, maple syrup, fresh/dried fruits, nuts, seeds, cinnamon, butter, honey, maple syrup, bananas, apples, jam, miso, etc
Method
In a small saucepan, combine the rolled oats and water or milk. Add a pinch of salt if desired.
Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a gentle boil.
Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and simmer the oats, stirring occasionally, for about 5 minutes or until the porridge reaches your desired consistency. If it becomes too thick, you can add more water or milk to reach your preferred texture.
Once the porridge is cooked to your liking, remove it from the heat and let it sit for a minute or two to thicken further.
Transfer the oat porridge to a bowl and add your favourite toppings such as honey, maple syrup, fresh fruits, nuts, seeds, or cinnamon.
Stir the toppings into the porridge and enjoy it warm.
